Art Discussion with Donald Sunshine

September 19 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Event Navigation

“This exhibit, Social Commentary is in the rich tradition of all the arts. Whether visual, literary, music, or performance, artists have used their artistic voices for commentary. Indeed, I consider it an artist’s responsibility to so comment.”

And comment Donald Sunshine has. On display are 25 pieces of art that are minimal, almost sparse, in style, each captioned with a question. It is in each painting’s starkness that the question asked echoes and doubles upon itself over and over. Questions that provoke the viewer to really think, to unpack the very simplicity of what is asked. Consider the painting here which asks, “It is okay to protest” (yes, it’s our right to speak out) followed the pregnant pause of the ellipsis…. “isn’t?” (maybe not…let’s consider the consequences of that right).

Sunshine’s artistic commentary is active in the dialogue it creates and pointedly addresses relevant contemporary concerns, such as immigration, poverty, the environment, and race relations.

On Wednesday, September 19, Sunshine will will introduce his art and lead an open discussion.

Free of charge; light refreshments available.

Our Social Commentary exhibit will end on October 10.

Donald Sunshine, Professor Emeritus of Architecture, Virginia Tech, has exhibited widely, including Chicago’s Art Institute and Museum of Science and Industry, as well as in Hawaii, Virginia, Florida, and elsewhere.
